Ever since hepatitis B and HIV brought concern to the medical profession, the use of gloves for self-protection has increased considerably. Nevertheless, press reports from the USA still show that there are problems with hygiene. "2 million nosocomial infections p.a. - 77,000 of this patients die." Do we still pay too little attention to this issue?
Gloves were first introduced into surgery over one hundredyears ago- by William S. Halsted in 1896. Since then, they have made avitalcontribution to general hygiene and have become state of the artinmodern medicine, particularly when working under aseptic conditions (but not only for surgical interventions). The originalidea was toprotect the hands from the adverse dermatological effectsof antisepticsolutions. Ultimately, the mutual exchange of pathogensbetween thedoctor and patient, and the direct contact with blood, bodyfluids andexcrements was to be prevented.
