The increasing demand for products in daily use and the invention of the steam engine formed the basis of the Industrial Age at the beginning of the 19th Century. Slowly the tight restrictions of the trade associations were loosened and traditional manual labour was replaced step-by-step by cheaper mass productions. This was the beginning of a development both in Europe and the USA, the consequences of which are still determining our working life today. Mass production methods enabled the production of the most varied products at a considerably more favourable price which meant, that they were obtainable by an ever increasing circle of the population. Decreasing prices increased the demand and therefore the production. However, mass production did not only bring advantages. In addition to the social problems at the commencement of the industrial era, new measures had to be found in order to bring the quality of mass products to a corresponding quality level.
